Lolita's Personality

Lolita's care

For years activists have been calling for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, activists believed that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, and over-exerting her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor, on a plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean itself, not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and connect with their family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for 40 years. The nation's most active activists, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present state of health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging rapidly and that her health has declined.

It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, since her captor is not obliged to disclose the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often an integral factor in the death of orcas in captivity.

Despite these ongoing health concerns there is a lot of hope that Lolita may be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to move the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea and she will be able to go swimming in the deep sea and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale that died on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
