Lolita's Personality

Macaws are great companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. They are the perfect addition to families with a range of members. They can become bored quickly and discover ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not engaging with them enough often. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive, and can even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly established to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that enjoy playing, climbing and play. They must spend at least 2 to 3-hours a day outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as well as local restaurants and bars. They are not only a great pet but also a wonderful pet for children.

Despite their adoring nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a distraction to those who live close by. They can make high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be a nuisance in apartments and condos or in close proximity to children who might be startled by their noise.

The species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this the only way to determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is established and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. This is not a quick process, and it's essential that the pet's owner is patient and realizes that this is not a task to be taken lightly. Lolita's care

For a long time, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists hoped that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the ocean.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her to be a family member, on a plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast price of blue macaw Washington in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean, not an empty concrete tank.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any details regarding the condition of Lolita. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates show that Toki is aging quickly and her health has deteriorated.

It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor is not required to divulge this information. However, a repository of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of orcas in captivity.
