A three-wheel buggy is great for tackling off-road terrain providing the most comfortable ride for your baby. They are also simpler to push and manoeuvre than a four-wheeler especially those equipped with slings made of fabric or modular seat units that are placed in a tight position within the frame and deliver the best shape and weight distribution.

Stability

A three-wheel buggy has excellent stability, which is the reason it's a good option for off-road walks (especially with an all-terrain or off-road-style seat). They typically have larger front wheels, which cope well with kerbs and bumps and rough ground. Some have a lockable wheels on the front for extra stability when driving on uneven terrain.

It's worth bearing in mind that 3-wheel buggies may have a lower center of gravity than models with four wheels which means that they fall over more easily. The best 3-wheeled pushchairs have been built with the perfect geometry to ensure they remain steady in any weather. They must be able to pivot on a dime, be easy to steer using just one hand, and feature the front wheel rotate 360o that makes them great for manoeuvring and navigating difficult terrain.

For really tricky surfaces you should look for models with air-filled tyres, also known as pneumatic tyres. These are designed to handle roads that are not paved and can deal with mud, gravel, rock etc. Many all-terrain buggies have a swivelling front wheel that can be locked to increase stability when tackling extremely rough terrain too.

A 3 wheel stroller travel system-wheeled pram is a great option for those who run or like to walk fast uphill. This is especially true if you plan to connect to a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is an excellent model. It has an incline-reclining seat that is flat, with five-point harnesses, and plenty of storage space to store all your equipment (plus a 50+ extendable sun hood). It's compact, lightweight and suitable for babies and can be used with the use of a car seat or carrycot. It can also be used for light jogging but it's not designed for serious runners.

Weight

If you're looking for a vehicle that can handle the tough terrain, you need one with big wheels. These will cope well over grass, cobbles and dirt tracks while providing an enjoyable ride for all passengers. They're also ideal for jogging because they have built in suspension and are easy to move up and down kerbs. However, the drawback is that they can be quite heavy to push.

The most suitable 3 wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). This 3-wheeler is highly mobile due to its 16 rear wheels and a lockable front wheel. It comes with air tyres which require pumping occasionally and it can be used to carry children until the age of 3. MFM reviewer Kath said that her toddler liked the shape of the seat, and she found it easy to steer even with her three-year-old child on the board.

Another option that is great is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, that comes with an adjustable handlebar as well as a hood that is of high-quality with 50+ UV protection. It is also easy to move kerbs up and down and fits in a the boot of a car that is small 3 wheel stroller. It can also be used as a stroller and baby carriers or toddlers.

Fabric slings are positioned within the frame and not on top as modular seats. This design provides a lower center of gravity that is at the ideal height, making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you cannot think about how often you'll be doing this as a new parent!)

Seating

There are many options for seating in 3 wheelers. The carrycot included is ideal for a baby (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a comfy and cozy lie-flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy). Older infants and toddlers will appreciate the spacious and padded seat with adjustable ventilation. It's important to note that these seats don't recline fully however they can be lowered to the lowest level that will still allow your child plenty of headroom and space to move around.

A fabric sling is also available. It has the advantage that it is located inside the frame instead of being placed on top of it as a seat that is modular. This results in a lower centre of gravity and a perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push, particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs and MFM reviewer Kath loved the way this kind of seat dealt with these obstacles.

In addition to a large shopping basket, this type of buggy usually has pretty useful features such as an extendable 50+ UV hood, an easy to use brake pedal and some games-changing visibility lights that pop up from the handlebar and can be positioned directly in front of the occupants to increase their safety when traversing difficult terrain.

Stores

The 3-wheeled frame makes a buggy more stable and stable to push with one hand and also perfect for handling difficult terrain. The shopping basket is smaller than a four-wheeler.

MFM's reviewers have discovered that the 3 wheel all terrain pushchair-wheeler frame can't pass through all doors in their homes or small car booties - make sure you check the dimensions of the buggy when it's folded before buying if you're worried about space.

Choose a 3-wheeler with 2 (or 3!) seats. This is the best option for your child's future and will help you save money. The iCandy strawberry sport is among the top of them and can be used as a single seat from day dot and later converts into twin buggies once your baby begins walking.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more enjoyable. These are included on pushchairs such as the Phil & Ted's Sport that MFM reviewer Kath said provided "an amazing ride for her toddler". She also said that the grippy tyres on it made it easy to navigate kerbs and cobbles.

They can be tricky to keep inflated and need to be replenished regularly. They are also more prone to punctures than foam tyres. So you'll need to ensure that you have repair kits with spare tubes and a pump handy when you're out and about in your buggy.

PU tyres can be seen on more pushchairs than air-filled tyres but they're still as sturdy. PU tire are easily identifiable by their matte finish and supple feel. They also slide over flat and tidied surfaces.

If you rub your hands over the tyres, then you can tell if they are PU or rubber. If it feels like it's sliding, then it's a rubber or PU. You can also check whether your buggy comes with PU tyres sliding them across a flat, clean surface. They should roll smoothly and fit comfortably into wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are often utilized in high-performance buggies and Joggers due to their ability to deal with the rough terrain that's common to this type of pushchair. The drawback is that the foam can compress and make your buggy feel less stable as it loses its springy quality. The tyres can also be noisy due to the fact that they create lots of noise when you turn and drive around town.
